Injured Reece Walsh is competing with Selwyn Cobbo to reclaim his fullback position, as he announces that he will miss the first State of Origin match.
The 22-year-old sustained a posterior cruciate ligament injury during the round seven game against the Warriors. The club mentioned he is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.
Cobbo shifted from wing to fullback during the recent 40-18 victory over Canterbury and performed impressively, just as he did in his previous two games in that role.
Walsh is anticipated to reclaim his spot once he returns, though Cobbo’s ability to play in various positions adds to the team’s dynamics. However, Walsh is not taking anything for granted.
He attended the Magic Round launch on Thursday, engaging with supporters.
“I believe healthy competition within the club is beneficial. It motivates everyone to perform at their best,” he expressed.
“‘Cobs is exceptional. I’m truly proud of his performance. He’s even giving me some pointers.
“In rugby league, we embrace the next-man-up mentality, and everyone is rising to the challenge.
“I’m genuinely impressed by the resilience the team is showing each week.”
Cobbo’s contract ends in 2025, and the Broncos are facing salary cap challenges in retaining him. Meanwhile, Walsh, whose contract runs until the end of 2028, hopes the club will keep Cobbo.
“Sel has his family here, and we’d love for him to be part of the team throughout his career,” Walsh stated.
“I know the club is doing an excellent job to secure him, and he just needs to keep playing well and enjoying his game.”
Although Walsh is the current Maroons fullback, he understands he will miss the Origin opener on May 28, with the Queensland squad being announced on May 18.
“No, I probably won’t make the first Origin, but you never know how my knee will feel,” he remarked regarding his chances for the Maroons.
“It’s holding up well for now, but I hope to get through my rehab and assess how things go.
“It might take a few more weeks. Injuries can be frustrating.
“That’s part of our sport; it’s tough and physical, and I just have to keep rolling with the challenges.”
Suspended five-eighth Ezra Mam will be eligible for selection starting round 10, and Walsh is eager for his comeback.
Coach Michael Maguire needs to decide whether to reintroduce him through the Queensland Cup or play him immediately against South Sydney.
Another question is where he will play, with the potential for him to take the No.6 jersey, leading to Ben Hunt possibly moving to No.9 or No.14.
“I’m really looking forward to Ezra’s return,” Walsh shared.
“I know he has been working hard in the off-season to come back and has been doing a lot outside of football to prepare himself.
“I can’t wait for when he is back. I’m not sure when that will be, but I know he will give his all for the club, the fans, and everyone who believes in him.”
