Authorities reported on Tuesday that two individuals fell approximately 380 feet to their deaths at a well-known viewpoint in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, the same day their bodies were found.
The reasons behind their fall are still unknown, and it is unclear how long their bodies had been there. According to Wade Mathews, a representative of the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, it seems the couple—a man and a woman—may have climbed past the safety railing at Inspiration Point.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the identities of the deceased had not been disclosed. Authorities shared that they had been living in a U-Haul truck prior to the tragic incident, with their last known address in Florida.
Tourists discovered their bodies, and the sheriff’s office indicated they likely passed away late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Emergency teams utilized a helicopter for the recovery operation.
Recently, there was snow on the cliff’s top, which may have caused slippery conditions, according to officials.
Inspiration Point, which overlooks unique rock formations called hoodoos, is one of the most popular viewpoints along the Rim Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park, located in south-central Utah. This area forms a natural amphitheater and is especially frequented at sunrise.
A safety rail with chain-link fencing is in place between the trail and the edge of the cliff.
As of Wednesday, the National Park Service had not responded to requests for comments.
