A man has been charged with murder for allegedly starting a fire that resulted in the death of Chicago Fire Department (CFD) Captain David Meyer on Wednesday.
Patrick Cleary, President of the Chicago Fire Union Local 2, informed FOX 32 Chicago that it was “pretty evident” that the suspect, Charles Green, 44, ignited the blaze.

CHICAGO FIRE CAPTAIN DIES IN LINE OF DUTY AS GARAGE COLLAPSES POST-FIRE
The fire at the garage was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday, and after firefighters managed to put out the flames, the structure fell apart during salvage efforts, according to CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt.
A mayday alert was quickly issued just before 4:20 a.m., leading to Meyer, 54, being transported to a hospital.

Sadly, he was later pronounced dead.
Meyer is survived by his parents, a wife, three daughters, and one son, as stated by Nance-Holt.

A veteran of the Chicago fire service for 28 years, Meyer was a member of Truck 29 on the west side and previously held the position of lieutenant on Truck 35.
The University of Iowa Police assisted in ensuring one of Meyer’s daughters, who is studying there, was able to return home promptly.
