Rehearsals are in full swing for a major milestone in the life of any young musician: James Vickers and his band are gearing up for their first tour.
“It’s a bit intimidating. Sometimes I feel nervous just thinking about it,” Vickers shared.
At just 15 years old, Vickers has been growing his audience in Nanaimo. He recently launched his debut album, with performances scheduled in Indigenous communities across British Columbia, some of which hold significant family connections.

“We really wanted to return to Bella Bella. James hasn’t been there before,” shared his father, Noel Vickers. “That’s where his great-grandfather was from.”
Noel plays more than a supportive father; he acts as the tour manager and promoter, filling multiple roles.

“I’m the roadie and the driver since he’s only 15. If someone had told me that my most exciting and fulfilling chapter would come in my sixties, I’d have laughed, but here I am.”
It’s hard to believe it has only been five years since James first picked up a guitar.
“I entered the music scene without expectations, and without expectations, it’s hard to feel disappointed,” he reflected.
The James Vickers Band is soon to perform in Bella Bella, Prince Rupert, and Hazelton on this tour, providing a glimpse of what’s ahead after high school.

“Once he graduates, I believe he’ll want to pursue a touring career like so many great artists,” said Noel Vickers. “I’m fully behind him in this.”
As he embarks on this journey, other talented kids might see him perform and realize that anything is achievable.
“I’m fortunate to have amazing people and talented musicians surrounding me,” James expressed.
“It’s all excitement, especially considering what we’re doing and where we’re headed. I can’t express how much it means to me.”
