Although the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to be released, the show’s conclusion is already in view. In a surprising development for this popular series, Paramount+ has announced that Season 5 will be its final season, with filming set to begin later this year.
Unlike the usual 10 episodes, the last season will only feature six episodes. This decision aligns with cost-reduction measures at Paramount Global, which recently revealed plans to cut its workforce in the U.S. by 15 percent. Interestingly, none of the newer Star Trek series have lasted beyond five seasons, which may connect to Captain Kirk’s early mention of a five-year mission.
“From the outset, Strange New Worlds aimed to pay tribute to the essence of Star Trek — embodying endless curiosity, optimism, and the belief in a brighter future,” said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. “We are immensely grateful to Paramount+ for allowing us to complete our five-season vision alongside our incredible cast and crew. We also want to express our thanks to the dedicated fans who have boldly joined us on this journey. With three thrilling seasons still to come, this adventure is just beginning.”
This prequel series, set in the time when Captain Christopher Pike commanded the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took over, premiered in 2022 and has received multiple award nominations. The much-anticipated third season will debut in the U.S. on July 17, featuring Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane and special guest star Paul Wesley.
The end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds won’t signify the end for the Star Trek franchise, as Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is on the horizon. Created by showrunner Noga Landau, this new series will feature Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain leading the Academy, and is slated to premiere later this year or in early 2026.
As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the release dates for both Seasons 4 and 5 remain unannounced.
