Thypoch has released its newest lens in the Simera series—the Simera 21mm f/1.4. This lens is an exciting option for users of Leica M-mount who desire a wide-angle lens rich in character.
This 21mm lens is currently the widest prime in Thypoch’s expanding Simera range, maintaining the brand’s signature mix of traditional aesthetics, top-notch optics, and adaptability that appeals to both rangefinder fans and cinematic photographers.
A Wide Lens Designed for Cinematic Use
The 21mm focal length is popular in filmmaking due to its capability to capture expansive landscapes and create a sense of depth. Thypoch embraces this filmic heritage, incorporating aspects of the design from the Simera-C 21mm cinema lens. The new Simera 21mm f/1.4 delivers stunning visuals whether you are shooting photographs or videos.
The lens houses 13 elements arranged in 11 groups, including 2 aspherical components, 3 extra-low dispersion (ED) elements, and 3 high-refractive index (HRI) glass elements. Thypoch claims this optical arrangement is optimized to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion, providing clear, lifelike images from corner to corner. A floating focus system ensures consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, especially at close subjects.
Similar to other lenses in the Simera series, the 21mm f/1.4 operates fully manually but includes some modern features. A depth-of-field scale and a tactile resistance at 0.7m indicate the limits for effective rangefinder coupling, facilitating quick and easy focusing. The aperture ring can switch between click and de-click modes, making it versatile for both photography and videography.
With a fast f/1.4 aperture, this lens creates a shallow depth of field and excels in low-light situations, and the 14-blade diaphragm ensures smooth, circular bokeh without the undesirable onion-ring effect.
Its minimum focusing distance of 0.23 meters makes it an impressively versatile wide-angle lens—not only ideal for sweeping landscapes but also for striking environmental portraits. Weighing 427 grams, the Simera 21mm f/1.4 strikes a good balance between optical intricacy and portability. Although designed for the Leica M mount, it can easily adapt to various mirrorless systems like Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Fujifilm X, and L-mount with an appropriate adapter.
The lens comes with a square metal lens hood and is available in black or silver finishes, giving it a classic appearance that complements its rangefinder heritage.
Pricing and Availability
The Thypoch Simera 21mm f/1.4 is currently available for $999 USD / €889 EUR through authorized retailers and directly from Thypoch. With the growing popularity of the Simera series and the scarcity of high-quality, manual wide-angle lenses, it’s likely this one won’t last long on the shelves.
