For anyone with an EOS R series camera, add the RF50mm F1.8 STM lens to that list. As a 50mm lens it’s already compact, but as part of the EOS R System, it’s even more compact due to its compatibility with an EOS R camera body, so there’s every reason to keep it attached or put in your bag so you can shoot – and get a great shot – anywhere and anytime. Size isn’t all though. As a fixed focal length lens, it lets you be creative with composition and can be used for a wide range of scenes, from snapshots to portraits to landscapes and more. Those images will stand out, too, just like you intend whether on social media or just sharing, thanks to impressive optical features like a PMo aspherical lens to suppress aberrations, coatings to reduce flaring and ghosting, and a large f/1.8 aperture for low-light shooting and circular bokeh. Pick it up and use it one time and you’ll see for yourself, and you won’t be able to leave the house without it.
Compact, Lightweight Fixed 50 millimeter Focal Length Lens.
Large F, 1.8 Aperture for Low-Light Photography and Creative Background Blur

Nifty Fifty, doing Nifty Fifty thing
The Nifty Fifty is an incredible little lens that punches well above its price point. For portraits or isolating subjects, the sharpness and background blur it delivers are stunning. Itâs lightweight, compact, and feels like the perfect travel companion for any photographer wanting something simple but powerful. That said, itâs not without its limitations. On an APS-C camera, the 50mm becomes more like a 75mm equivalent, so it feels quite “zoomed in.” This makes it less practical for tight indoor spaces or wide shots when you’re working in close quarters. If youâre in a small room and trying to fit a group of people or a wide scene into the frame, youâll find yourself constantly backing up or hitting walls.Despite this, the Nifty Fifty is an essential tool if you understand what itâs built for. Its optical quality at this price is phenomenal, and itâs perfect for portraits, detail shots, or anything where compression and subject isolation shine. Just keep in mind the cropped field of view on APS-C sensors, and youâll get a lot of joy out of this lens.

Light and reliable.
This is a great first lens for anyone getting into the Canon RF system. It really helps you take amazing photos and the focal length teaches you to see composition and shoot properly. This is the first lens everyone should own.It is light and quick to focus. It is tack sharp at all apertures and the control ring can be set to a variety of options. This is my favorite lens and I love it.

Solid Nofty Fifty for the Times
Canons EF 50mm was legendary, as itâs price and weight couldnât be beat, and this update to that for the new RF mount system is no different.I love how light and compact this lens is, and on a full-frame sensor 50mm is a fun focal length to play around with. The only ricky thing with this lens has more to do with the new focus/control ring system the RF cameras now have the ability to do. The ring on the lens can be swapped between focus mode or control ring mode, where the former works as expected (as long as your settings are set correctly in camera) and the latter allows you to select many different options (iso, apurture, shutter speed, etc) to control by simply twisting the ring. A handy feature, but one to get used to as focusing for so many years had my brain and hands programmed for that focusing function.Excellent value for what you get, and itâs a fast enough lens still as well to photograph in near pitch-black situations with usable results. The RF system is incredible.

Great starter lens option
I am new to photography and wanted a lens that I didnât have to worry about focus and zoom. This is a great lens for portrait pictures. I mostly use my camera for pictures of my kids/family.I will eventually upgrade to a zoom lens, but for now this is great. You just have to move closer and further to your subject to get the correct distance for your shot. It is also much cheaper than a zoom lens. Definitely enough to get a great photo!

latest iteration of the nifty fifty
The latest iteration of the nifty-fifty. The RF version is a little lighter & smaller than the EF version as expected, but is familiar in all other ways. Yes, the L-glass RF50mm will be better, but it’s 11-12x the price.Everything that has always made this a great lens remains unchanged: small, light, fast, cheap, with a generally useful walk-around focal length. The wide aperture lets you play with DoF and low-light making this lens more versatile than the STM kit zoom you may also have.On a full frame body, the field of view is usable even relatively close to the subject. I can take a photo of a plate of food while sitting at the table (but I do have to lean back). This is the lens you want if you’re unsure what lens you want, or if you’re just starting out, or if you’re trying to keep it inexpensive, or if you want the camera&lens combo as small or light as possible. All around versatile and Recommended.

Super sharp pictures with this lens!
I’ve been using zoom lenses for many years, but wanted to try a prime lens and after reading so many positives on this lens, I bought it. I shoot with a Canon R6 and you do NOT need an adaptor for this lens to fit the camera and the pictures I’ve taken with it are super sharp!! Plus, the price is extremely affordable! The only challenge, where it’s a prime lens, you can’t zoom in or out, you have to position yourself and the camera a lot more to get the pictures you want. This lens has more of a “zoomed-in” look, so I found that I have to step back further than I’m used to, to get everything in frame. It takes a little getting used to, but the results of this F1.8 lens are very impressive and produce the type of sharpness I’ve been wanting to get in my photos. If you’ve been searching camera lenses, you know that they can be very expensive, so with the low price of this lens, it’s worth giving a try.

No complaints at all
A lot of youtube reviewers chastise this lens as slow focus and not great quality, but they get things for free so don’t trust them, they’re always going to knock lower-cost gear. This lens works great. yes, the auto-focus can be a bit slow in low light, but it’s $200 and unless you’re some sort of pro sports photographer, it’s not THAT slow. The end result is what matters, and it does lock on focus very well, and images/video is very sharp. That’s all you need. I use it for studio interview videos on a tripod mostly, once it locks in the eye focus, it never loses it and the f/1.8 gives me a lot of variance in lighting. If you’re on a budget, but have the Canon R line of cameras, don’t be afraid of this lens. Give it a shot.
