Panasonic is enhancing its latest full-frame LUMIX models by introducing significant updates through new firmware. The LUMIX S1R II, S1 II, and S1 IIE will all benefit from improved video, autofocus, and workflow features — and the best part? Most upgrades come at no additional cost.
LUMIX S1R II: Firmware Version 1.2
At the forefront is the S1R II, which receives a notable upgrade in both its video and photography capabilities. With Firmware 1.2, the device now allows for 8.1K and 7.2K Open Gate (3:2) recording, plus the ability to output RAW video via HDMI when connected to an external recorder.
For those engaged in cinematic projects, Panasonic is adding support for ARRI LogC3 color space, allowing users to align S1R II footage with that of ARRI cameras. However, accessing this function requires the purchase of the DMW-SFU3A Software Upgrade Key for $199.99, which is a worthwhile investment for those already utilizing ARRI’s color science.
Autofocus improvements are also included with a new Urban Sports recognition feature, designed to better identify humans in dynamic settings like breakdancing, parkour, and skateboarding.
Photographers will appreciate the new focus stacking capability, which merges multiple images taken at varying focal lengths into one with expanded depth of field — a fantastic advantage for macro photography.
The update also introduces direct file transfers from internal cards to external SSDs, proxy recording on internal storage while outputting RAW over HDMI, and Capture One tethering support through Wi-Fi or a wired LAN connection (utilizing a USB adapter). Customization options have also been expanded, allowing for assignable key functions, the choice of focus ring direction in manual mode, and up to 10 customizable autofocus frame colors.
S1 II and S1 IIE: Firmware Version 1.1
The Lumix S1 II and the S1 IIE are also receiving valuable updates through Firmware 1.1.
Both models now feature improved framing options with seven new aspect ratios and the ability to display up to three overlays simultaneously — great for content creators who need to adapt to various platforms and crop requirements.
Similar to the S1R II, these models also gain support for ARRI LogC3 color space (with the paid DMW-SFU3A key), focus stacking, and Capture One tethering functionality via Wi-Fi or USB LAN adapter. They too benefit from the customizable 10-color autofocus frame feature, enhancing usability in different shooting conditions.
Availability
Firmware 1.2 for the LUMIX S1R II and Firmware 1.1 for both the S1 II and S1 IIE will be available for download starting June 24, 2025, on Panasonic’s global support site. These updates are free, while the ARRI LogC3 upgrade key will be available separately for $199.99.
For anyone considering a new Panasonic camera, the Lumix S1R II is currently retailing at $3,297.99, with the S1 II and S1 IIE priced at $3,197.99 and $2,497.99, respectively.
