It seems Nikon is planning something significant for video creators. A recent report from Nikon Rumors reveals that the company is developing a new version of its proprietary Log profile named N-Log2. If this is accurate, it could enhance Nikon’s hybrid camera series, particularly for video makers who depend on Log video for color grading and dynamic range.
The current N-Log format features a 10-bit gamma curve aimed at maximizing dynamic range, allowing filmmakers greater flexibility during post-production. While the unprocessed footage may appear flat and lacking in color, applying a LUT or grading it later can produce stunning visuals with deep contrast and well-preserved highlights and shadows. Currently, N-Log offers up to 12 stops of dynamic range.
So, what enhancements might N-Log2 introduce? Details are limited, but the report indicates Nikon is collaborating with RED Digital Cinema, the professional video camera brand it acquired last year, to create the new gamma profile. Such a partnership makes this update particularly noteworthy.
There’s speculation that N-Log2 could deliver dynamic range capabilities on par with or exceeding Sony’s S-Log3, which reaches approximately 14 stops. This improvement could significantly bolster Nikon’s standing in the hybrid video market.

The rumor suggests that N-Log2 will be compatible with all current Nikon cameras that already support N-Log, including the Z9, Z8, Z7 II, Z6 III, Zf, and the forthcoming Z5 II. Notably, only the Zf doesn’t support N-RAW, Nikon’s RAW video format that allows for maximum editing flexibility.
Adding to the speculation, there are whispers about Nikon creating a cinema-style camera, potentially named the Nikon ZR. Inspired by Sony’s FX3, the ZR is rumored to have a compact and cage-friendly design, a substantial rear display, and possibly even more influence from RED. Whether this is accurate or not, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Nikon delve further into the professional video sector.
Recently, RED released four LUTs for Nikon N-Log, giving footage a classic film appearance. These LUT files can be utilized while shooting with an external monitor or during post-production for editing and color grading. You can download the LUT files here.
