When Tod Maffin, a resident of Nanaimo, invited Americans to visit his city to show their support for Canada, he didn’t expect a large turnout.
To his surprise, he was mistaken.
Maffin created a TikTok video in February encouraging Americans to come this weekend, and over 2,000 individuals indicated they would attend.
Some tourists have already arrived, while others are on their way.

“Even if just 100 people show up, it’s fantastic to have Americans spending money in our economy during the trade conflict,” Maffin shared with Global News.
“We’re fundamentally a resource-based community with strong ties to forestry, fishing, and mining. Having visitors contribute financially during challenging times is amazing,” Maffin continued.

This Friday, Maffin will host everyone at Maffeo Sutton Park for a community photo.
He has pledged to show tourists around, highlighting all that the area has to offer.
