Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, reached out to U.S. immigration officials in Los Angeles, seeking leniency for fans attending the Mexico vs. Dominican Republic Gold Cup soccer match at SoFi Stadium on Saturday.
“We believe there won’t be any [immigration] actions during the soccer match… we urge that none be carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Sheinbaum stated during a press conference on Friday.
“Mexico will always advocate for peace,” she continued.
A now-removed social media post from U.S. Customs and Border Protection indicated they would be “prepared” for the initial round of Club World Cup soccer matches this week.
In response, the CBP clarified that they routinely ensure security at major sporting events.
“U.S. Customs and Border Protection is dedicated to collaborating with local and federal partners to ensure that the FIFA Club World Cup 25 is secure for all participants, similar to how we manage every major sports event, including the Super Bowl. Our objectives remain unchanged,” they told The Associated Press on Thursday.
CALIFORNIA SHERIFF STATES NEWSOM ‘INFLUENCED’ LA RIOTS AS ICE ARRESTS VIOLENT ILLEGAL ALIENS
Downtown Los Angeles is still under curfew.
Since Saturday, Los Angeles police have made almost 400 arrests and detentions, focusing mainly on individuals who failed to disperse, according to the department. A few more serious charges include assaults on police officers, possession of a Molotov cocktail, and possession of a firearm.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that several convicted criminals illegally residing in the U.S. were detained during Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Los Angeles on Monday and Tuesday.
The ICE operations in Los Angeles sparked protests and riots in certain areas of the city, prompting President Donald Trump to deploy National Guard troops to safeguard federal immigration officers during their arrests.
“Murderers, pedophiles, and drug traffickers. These are the criminals that rioters are trying to protect. How much longer will Governor Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass prioritize these criminal illegal immigrants over their own citizens?” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin remarked in a statement on Wednesday.
