Square Enix has confirmed that it is still hard at work on its much-anticipated action RPG sequel, Kingdom Hearts 4, posting a series of game screenshots which finally give fans a first look at the long-gestating title.
This reveal comes after the studio reported on the cancellation of its GPS-based mobile game spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, to which they followed up on the unfortunate news with an assurance to fans that the team was “hard at work” on Kingdom Hearts 4. True enough, the studio would then post a collage of screenshots via a post on the game’s social media channels, teasing stills of not only gameplay, but its characters and villains too.

“We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts 4 and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!” said Square Enix in its post, “We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts 4 when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience.”
The screenshots not only detail the upcoming game’s updated graphics alongside the series’ familiar HUD elements, but they also hint towards a fully playable Mickey Mouse. The iconic Disney mascot, who has appeared in all three mainline Kingdom Hearts titles and many of its spin-offs, was previously only playable temporarily during certain boss battles, but only once the game’s protagonist, Sora, is defeated. The new images seem to confirm that Mickey will be fully playable this time around, allowing players to explore the world as the iconic character.
It has certainly been a long time coming for Kingdom Hearts 4, with the title being announced back in September 2022 via a cinematic trailer. Three years on, Square Enix had remained largely quiet on its upcoming sequel, until now, that is, with the studio also previously suggesting that the fourth game will finally bring the franchise’s infamously complex narrative to an end after 18 games.
