2019’s Rambo: Last Blood might have marked the final chapter in the iconic action franchise, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end for the bandana-sporting war veteran, as an origin movie, titled John Rambo, is currently in the works by Sisu director Jalmari Helander.
As reported by Deadline and Empire, John Rambo will be launching at the Cannes market courtesy of Millennium Media (Expendables, The Hitman’s Bodyguard), and will serve as a prequel to the 1982 classic First Blood. The movie’s script will be penned by writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam), and will feature a young John Rambo during his time serving in the Vietnam War.

According to Deadline, Sylvester Stallone, who has portrayed the iconic character across the franchise’s five films, is aware of the upcoming project but will not be involved, with early casting calls underway to secure a young actor who can fill in the acting legend’s boots. Principal photography for the film is set to begin in October in Thailand.
With his 2022 war epic Sisu, Helander has proven his expertise in delivering an action extravaganza with equal parts violence and strong character development, making him the perfect fit for exploring Rambo’s time during the war, and the accompanying atrocities that shaped him to become the soldier fans know and love.

”I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since the age of 11,” Helander said in a statement accompanying the project’s announcement. “It is so surreal to be in a situation where I can actually make my own Rambo movie. The chain of events that got me here makes, in a fantastic way, my whole childhood make sense. I can’t wait to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs.”
Although a release window for John Rambo has yet to be revealed, this certainly marks a busy period for Helander, who is also gearing up for his upcoming sequel Sisu 2, which will undoubtedly bring more gratuitous World War II violence when it hits theatres on 21 November 2025.
