With both streaming services and cable, there’s a vast array of entertainment options available. Here’s a roundup of TV shows and specials airing or streaming from April 28 to May 4. Note that details and times might change.
Friendship and Romance.
“The Four Seasons,” a comedic show featuring Tina Fey and Steve Carell, draws inspiration from the 1981 Alan Alda film of the same name. In this series, Fey and Carell portray Kate and Jack, whose long-standing friendships with three other couples (with Marco Calvani, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Erika Henningsen, and Kerri Kenney-Silver also starring) face challenges when one couple decides to divorce, making their regular weekend getaways complicated. Available for streaming on Thursday via Netflix.
Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the “Pride and Prejudice” film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen, Jane Austen is back in the spotlight. This week, the BBC series “Miss Austen” is premiering in the U.S. The storyline follows Jane Austen (portrayed by Patsy Ferran) and her sister Cassandra (played by Keeley Hawes) as they navigate through life, love, and friendship. While the characters are inspired by real individuals from Austen’s world, most of the plot elements are fictional. Catch it on Sunday at 9 p.m. on PBS.
Style and Beliefs.
After a decade on “What Not to Wear,” along with a public fallout and a rebranding, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly return with their new show “Wear Whatever the F You Want.” The show continues to offer fashion guidance but adopts a fresh perspective: focusing less on strict style rules and more on discovering personal styles (like punk rock or glam) that make people feel confident. I’m thrilled to see the entertaining dynamic between Stacy and Clinton back on my television. Streaming on Tuesday on Prime Video.
Walton Goggins was a familiar face with “White Lotus” and “The Righteous Gemstones,” which is concluding this week, leaving us without his presence. The series features the Gemstones, a wealthy televangelist family running a megachurch, and has been relatively mild in its fourth and last season. However, it still delivers plenty of mischief, catchy songs, and odd family interactions. The series finale airs on Sunday at 10 p.m. on HBO and is also available for streaming on Max.
Two Disturbing Documentaries.
The Netflix series “Turning Point” has previously explored significant events like the September 11 attacks and the Cold War. This season, it examines the Vietnam War, marking the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, through archival footage and released government documents, aiming to reveal the conflict’s effects on American identity. Streaming on Wednesday via Netflix.
The murder of Ana Páez in 2008 is a particularly brutal case and was dubbed “the perfect crime” by Spanish media. María Ángeles Molina, known as Angi, received a 22-year prison sentence after a court found her guilty of murdering Páez for financial gain and attempting to make it appear as a failed sexual assault. The two-part Spanish-language series “Angi: Fake Life True Crime,” delves into the crime and the ensuing court proceedings. Streaming on Thursday via Netflix.
Celebrity Chefs: Then and Now.
Today, celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay, Ina Garten, and Guy Fieri are commonplace. But in Napoleonic France? Not so much—until we meet Antonin Carême (played by Benjamin Voisin). The French series “Carême” chronicles the life of this young pastry chef, whose rise to fame catches the attention of politicians seeking to use him as a spy in France. His struggle against poverty may put him in a compromising position. Streaming on Wednesday via AppleTV+.
The “Chef’s Table” series, which has been on air for a decade, showcases the cooking and personal journeys of some of the finest chefs worldwide. The latest spinoff, “Chef’s Table: Legends” focuses on notable chefs who have enchanted the world with their culinary skills: Alice Waters, the pioneer of the farm-to-table movement; Thomas Keller, the American chef with the most Michelin stars; Jamie Oliver, the famous British chef known for “The Naked Chef”; and José Andrés, a Spanish Michelin-starred chef. I’m eagerly anticipating this and feeling hungry! Streaming on Monday via Netflix.
