HONG KONG: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that Beijing supports international regulations concerning the tariffs imposed by the US and opposes protectionist measures, according to the Foreign Ministry on Saturday (Apr 26).
During a meeting of foreign ministers from China and Central Asia in Kazakhstan, Wang expressed that China aims to unify efforts with other nations regarding the tariff issues and criticized the “extreme self-interest” and coercive tactics of specific countries, as highlighted in an official statement from the ministry.
US President Donald Trump claimed in an interview released on Friday that negotiations on tariffs with China were ongoing; however, Beijing refuted this, adding to a series of mixed messages about the progress being made to ease a trade conflict that poses risks to global economic growth.
Wang, while meeting with Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov, emphasized China’s commitment to collaborating with other nations and promoting multilateralism to “bring stability to the world”.
