Spokane, Washington has officially declared a state of emergency following protests where participants did not adhere to Mayor Lisa Brown’s curfew, which was set from 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m.
The curfew was implemented due to protests against ICE in downtown Spokane, stretching from Boone Ave to Spokane Falls Blvd and from Howard St to Division St, including Riverfront Park.
The demonstrations were triggered by a call to action from former Spokane City Councilman Ben Stuckart, seeking support for a Venezuelan man detained while seeking asylum.
“ACTION ALERT: Three weeks ago, I became the legal guardian to a young Venezuelan man seeking asylum. He has submitted all necessary paperwork and has a scheduled court hearing. Today, I accompanied him for his ICE check-in, where he was detained and sent to Tacoma,” his post stated. “If you care about these unjust detentions, please meet me at 411 West Cataldo by 2 p.m. I’m going to sit in front of the bus. Come join me. The Latino community needs our support right now!”

The Spokane Police Department and county sheriff’s office are currently on the scene, labeling the gathering as unlawful.
Spokane County Commissioner Josh Kerns addressed the ongoing riots in Spokane via statement.
“The unrest we are witnessing in Spokane is unacceptable,” said Commissioner Kerns. “I stand with our law enforcement officers who risk their lives to ensure safety for everyone. Thank you to our police and deputies, and their families—your service is appreciated.”

Kerns further stated, “I fully support every American’s right to free speech and peaceful protest—but that right does not extend to violence, obstructing law enforcement, damaging property, or endangering others. We must honor our freedoms while exercising them responsibly.”

“I urge everyone to stay peaceful and safe, and my thoughts are with families facing separation. Our unity is stronger than any attempt to divide us.”
Several protesters have been arrested on charges of “failure to disperse,” and SPD has used tear gas on the crowd.
