Celtic has matched their fierce Glasgow rivals, Rangers, by securing an impressive total of 55 Scottish top-flight titles, winning the Premiership with four games remaining.
Their decisive 5-0 victory over Dundee United on Saturday allowed Celtic to pull 18 points ahead of second-placed Rangers, who still have five matches to play.
This marks Celtic’s fourth consecutive league title and keeps them in the running for a sixth domestic treble in nine seasons.
Brendan Rodgers’ team has already clinched the Scottish League Cup and is set to compete in the Scottish FA Cup final against Aberdeen on May 24.
Rangers last captured one of their 55 league titles in 2021 but struggled to maintain pace with their Old Firm contenders, as Celtic has shown tremendous dominance in Scottish football.
They have secured 21 out of the last 26 domestic trophies available in Scotland, potentially making it 22 of 27 if they win their third consecutive Scottish FA Cup title.
Celtic’s captain, Callum McGregor, expressed his pride, stating, “Amazing performance, outstanding. It means the world to us.”
For Rodgers, this victory marks his 11th trophy and fourth league title across two terms as manager, as he aims for a third treble with Celtic.
Addressing the team’s performance, Rodgers acknowledged some negativity around the league but emphasized, “We focused on ourselves. Our mentality has been excellent.”
He added, “The competition is for everyone. When it counts, this team delivers. It’s not our fault we’re ahead by 18 points and scoring goals.”
Rodgers affirmed his commitment to Celtic for the upcoming season, stating, “I could not be happier here,” and highlighted the need to stay motivated and focused on achieving further records.
During the match against Dundee United, Celtic fans made their voices heard by throwing tangerines onto the pitch in protest against the high ticket prices for away supporters.
Chants regarding ticket prices accompanied the fruit throw, alongside a banner that read: “Enjoy the fruits of our labour.”
Stewards and Celtic players worked together to remove the tangerines from the field.
Prior to kick-off, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Pope Francis on the day of his funeral. Celtic fans honored him with banners and Vatican flags, chanting “Papa Francesco” as the silence commenced.
A Celtic delegation, including Rodgers and his team, had a private audience with Pope Francis following a match against Lazio in December 2023.
