During a match between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, first baseman Willson Contreras responded sharply to a Brewers player after a collision at first base.
The incident happened in the bottom of the third inning when Brewers third baseman Caleb Durbin hit a ground ball to Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who passed it to Contreras for the final out of the inning. As Contreras stepped back from the plate, he collided with Durbin.

Durbin went down after the hit, and Brewers star Rhys Hoskins was heard shouting at Contreras from the dugout, though tensions seemed to cool shortly after. When Contreras was back at bat, he was hit by a pitch from Brewers pitcher Jose Quintana. As he picked up the ball, he tossed it back to Quintana while heading toward first base.
Contreras got his revenge in the ninth inning with a solo home run off Brewers pitcher Rob Zastryzny, and he directed his attention toward the Brewers’ dugout.
The Cardinals secured an 8-5 victory, but the exchange of words didn’t stop after the game.

“One of their players likes to talk from a distance, but when he got close to me, he didn’t say anything,” Contreras expressed, according to The Athletic. “I expected more from him. He acts tough, but he’s just a coward. I’m not naming names; he knows who he is.”
Regarding Hoskins, Contreras mentioned that the Brewers player hadn’t communicated with him at all.
When asked about his exchange with Contreras, Hoskins simply stated that they were “just discussing first base tactics.”
Contreras’ home run marked his ninth of the season.
