Captain Kirk is making a comeback in the upcoming Star Trek comic series. In Star Trek: The Last Starship, set for release in September, he returns after his death, showcasing a fresh vision of the Starfleet future. This release diverges from prior stories that took place before his demise in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comic is created by writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, known for their work with Marvel, DC, and more. They previously received an Eisner nomination for a former Star Trek title released by IDW. The illustrations are provided by Adrián Bonilla.
“Forget everything you know about Star Trek. The Last Starship introduces a fresh crew, a new era, and a totally different atmosphere; we strive to be literary, intense, original, and most importantly, approachable,” Lanzing stated.
“We’re inviting you into the Federation’s darkest hour through the remarkable, noir-inspired lens of artist Adrián Bonilla, requiring no prior knowledge. Longtime Trek fans will experience an engaging read – this is a significant moment in Trek history that has never been showcased before – but ultimately, The Last Starship is a sophisticated and intricate sci-fi tale that anyone can enjoy,” he further explained.
The series is set during The Burn, a catastrophic event affecting the galaxy, which led to the destruction of every active warp core and brought the United Federation of Planets to the brink of collapse. Now mysteriously revived, Kirk must guide a new crew and ship to continue Starfleet’s mission of unity in the universe.
The first issue of Star Trek: The Last Starship is scheduled to launch on September 24, featuring a main cover by Francesco Francavilla and variants by Skyler Patridge and Michael Cho. Check them out below:
