Global News asked the main political parties aiming to shape Canada’s next government: If elected, how will you address the challenges to national security, stability in the Middle East, and human rights posed by the Iranian regime?
Below are their replies in the order they were received.
Conservative Party of Canada
The Conservatives support the enduring struggle of the Iranian people, who have faced long-term oppression from the Tehran regime.
In contrast to the Liberals, who promised to restore diplomatic ties with Tehran and took years to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group, Conservatives recognize the threat posed by the regime to the Iranian citizens and its destabilizing influence in the Middle East.
We will collaborate with allies to enforce oil sanctions against the Iranian regime, cutting off a critical source of their revenue. Additionally, we will seek to boost exports of Canadian oil and gas to partners in the Indo-Pacific and Europe, reducing their dependence on energy from Iran.

We will take national security issues seriously here at home, which the Liberals have neglected during their decade in power. Our intelligence and law enforcement will have the resources needed to safeguard Canadians.
We will aim to prevent regime members from entering Canada and enhance efforts to combat money laundering perpetrated by them within Canada’s financial system.
The Iranian regime is a threat to global peace and security through its military power and support for allied groups. A new Liberal government led by Mark Carney will partner with the international community to curb its destabilizing impacts in the region.
Since early 2024, the Liberal Government has identified 10 new organizations as terrorist groups under the Criminal Code, including the Houthis, Samidoun, and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This vital action equips Canadian law enforcement with additional tools to tackle terrorism-related offences including financing, travel, and recruitment, ensuring safety for Canadians.
A Liberal government led by Mark Carney will maintain collaboration with Canada’s national security and intelligence organizations to pinpoint and address entities that qualify for designation, imposing substantial consequences on these groups and their supporters.
Furthermore, the Iranian regime continues to blatantly disregard human rights, consistently suppressing its citizens and contributing to regional instability. Canada has imposed sanctions on 208 Iranian individuals and 254 entities for severe and systematic human rights abuses.
A Liberal government under Mark Carney will uphold current sanctions and measures—some of the strongest imposed against Iran. We will leverage every available resource to combat this oppressive regime and those responsible for its severe actions.
We will also persist in working with international allies to hold Iran accountable for the unlawful shootdown of PS752. We will support the families of the victims in their pursuit of justice and reparations.
A Mark Carney Liberal government will continue supporting a new pathway to permanent residency for the families of PS752 victims, upholding our commitment to reunite their loved ones.
Together with our partners, we will press the Islamic Republic of Iran to fully assume responsibility for its actions, including making reparations for the consequences of the downing.
