Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has affirmed that Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is “our player,” despite rumors suggesting the forward is looking to start anew with Sydney.
Currently, Ugle-Hagan is on leave from the Whitten Oval as he navigates personal challenges.
Since being the No. 1 draft pick, he has not participated in any games this season, largely due to his inability to consistently train with the Bulldogs since late last year.
Recently, Ugle-Hagan attended a health retreat in northern NSW to regain control of both his personal life and career.
On Tuesday, he shared a Rocky-inspired training montage, indicating positive strides in both his physical and mental well-being.
Beveridge viewed Ugle-Hagan’s video as a “great sign.”
“We need to be optimistic about his progress and future,” Beveridge noted on Wednesday.
“I see this as a good sign … he’s committing to focusing on his own health and journey.”
“Hopefully, he has some aspects of his life sorted out, which can help him get back to playing. When that will be, I’m not sure; it might take some time.”
A report from Nine Network on Tuesday evening suggested Ugle-Hagan, who has a contract with the Bulldogs until the end of 2026, is interested in joining the Swans next season.
“We advise to take any player rumors lightly. That’s our approach,” said Beveridge.
“He’s still our player.”
“We will continue to support him and make decisions that are best for him.”
“I fully expect him to be here next year.”
In other good news for the Bulldogs, star forward Sam Darcy is likely to return from a knee injury in time for the match against St Kilda next week.
Darcy sustained the injury in a game against the Saints back in round six.
Initial concerns suggested he might have torn his ACL, which would have sidelined him for the entire season.
However, the 21-year-old now appears to only miss seven games due to an impaction fracture in his left knee.
“It looks like Sam will probably be ready for next week,” Beveridge said before Thursday night’s game against Hawthorn.
“He’s been training with the team and has completed most sessions … he’s shown great professionalism in his rehabilitation.”
“As of now, it seems he’ll be prepared for next week’s match.”
