In a significant development for the Saw series, Deadline has reported that Blumhouse is negotiating to purchase the ownership rights of the franchise from Twisted Pictures.

This back-and-forth between the two companies has been ongoing, but if the acquisition is finalized, the beloved horror series will once again involve original director James Wan, who co-created it with writer Leigh Whannell. Lionsgate, which has distributed the films since 2004, will still be a collaborating partner.
Blumhouse, founded by Jason Blum, joined forces with Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, in early 2022. Upcoming films for this year include M3GAN 2.0, arriving on June 27, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, set to premiere in December.
The Saw franchise defied expectations, having been shot in just 18 days with a production budget of $1.2 million, yet it became one of the most successful horror films ever, grossing $104 million worldwide. This success led to multiple sequels, focusing on victims of the infamous serial killer John “Jigsaw” Kramer, who must navigate deadly traps and psychological challenges to survive.
The first sequel, Saw II, was released in October 2005, and the latest installment, Saw X, came out in 2023. An 11th film was planned for September 2025 but is currently not moving forward due to differing visions among the producers. Tobin Bell, who was expected to reprise his role as Jigsaw, is now in limbo, but Billy the Puppet — the creepy ventriloquist dummy used by Jigsaw — reassured fans that “the game is never over.”
