‘Ballerina’ | Breakdown of a Scene
Director Len Wiseman discusses a moment from his film “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina,” starring Ana de Armas.
Hi, I’m Len Wiseman, the director of “Ballerina.” In this part of the story, Eve, portrayed by Ana de Armas, is unaware that she is in the Devil’s Den. This scene showcases both action and the realization that everyone around her is an assassin. Jackson Spidell designed a choreography specifically for the confined setting. Our plans had to adapt once we arrived on location, as the actual space was much smaller than our rehearsals on stage. The top shot was particularly challenging to achieve in such close quarters; we had to create an entire rig, which took about two hours to set up. However, I believe this shot brings humor to the scene. I wanted the music to create a stark contrast—something that feels light-hearted and perhaps a bit cheesy, ultimately misleading the audience. In rehearsals, we explored using various diner items as potential weapons. My goal was to make this scene brutal yet entertaining.
