Miranda Sharp and Ashton Wilson, a couple from Edmonton who are engaged, had aspirations for the future.
“We weren’t perfect, we were genuine, but there wasn’t a single day we didn’t strive to support one another through happiness, challenges, and personal growth,” Sharp shared on Thursday at their east Edmonton residence.
“He deserved this life, and he was very intentional in his love, parenting, and future planning.”
The family of Sharp is grieving after a tragic accident resulted in Wilson’s death. He was driving with their daughter when the incident occurred this week in south Edmonton.
Despite the grief, life in Miranda Sharp’s household continues as usual as she plays with her dog and took her daughter to her pre-kindergarten graduation on Thursday morning.
However, just two days prior, their lives were drastically changed when her fiancé passed away.
“I was overwhelmed with tears, struggling to grasp that this was happening; the world felt unreal,” recounted Sharp.

Wilson was out on Tuesday with their four-year-old daughter, Charlize, and before he left, he called Sharp.
“I knew he was coming straight home. I just said ‘Goodbye’, and he responded, ‘I’ll see you soon’. That was our last conversation,” Sharp said.
This marked the last moment she shared with her partner, to whom she became engaged this spring during a family trip to Disney World, after five years together.
“It felt magical, something we had always wished for. We were planning our wedding for next summer and even beginning to grow our family with a (sperm) donor,” she added.

“From that day forward, she was his universe. He lived for her, for us, and for our family,” Sharp said, tears streaming down her face. “He was gentle, loving, protective, and fully devoted to us.”
“Watching him as a father was like witnessing someone fulfill their true calling.”

Sharp mentioned that Wilson was a natural leader and a great teacher.
“At DIY Training Centre, he had recently secured a teaching contract at the School for the Deaf. This was incredibly important to him, as he could utilize his signing abilities, and it aligned with his values of inclusion and accessibility, something he brought into our family since our daughter is on the Autism spectrum,” she explained. “He was excited about the opportunities ahead, ready to embrace them with joy, love, and us.”
“He still had so much more to offer.”
As Wilson drove home on Whitemud Drive Tuesday afternoon, he stopped to check something on the vehicle near the overpass at 111th Street.
While he was outside the van, he was struck by an eastbound semi-truck.

Feeling uneasy when Wilson and Charlize hadn’t returned, Sharp decided to go out and look for them.
“I was praying and thinking about Charlize. I never imagined that the adult, the one responsible, would not be safe,” reflected Sharp.

Upon her arrival at the accident site, she made a beeline for the ambulance.
“It was an immediate relief to see my baby was safe. However, it quickly turned to concern, thinking, ‘There’s one ambulance here; where’s Ashton?’”
The Edmonton Police Service and EMS attended to the collision, but unfortunately, Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the four-year-old was taken to Stollery Children’s Hospital as a safety measure.

The last two days have been incredibly overwhelming. Sharp is striving to honor Wilson by remaining resilient.
“I need to be there for my daughter; she was everything to us, and he wouldn’t want me to fall apart,” she said.
Wilson is being commemorated as a vibrant spirit in his community, and his fiancée is celebrating the person he was.
“Ashton didn’t just love me; he helped me heal. He created a space for the pain I carried and helped me grow into someone I never thought I could be. With him, I felt safe, complete, and acknowledged. I often told him he felt like a reward for all the struggles I had endured before him.
“Even now, I carry the gifts he left me, the way I navigate my grief, the way I show up for our daughter—it’s all influenced by the strength and love he infused into our family.”
