JAKARTA: On Wednesday (Jun 18), the international airport’s website indicated that at least two dozen flights to and from Bali, Indonesia, have been canceled. This disruption follows the eruption of a volcano in the eastern part of the country, which launched an ash plume reaching 10 kilometers into the atmosphere.
The eruption occurred at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a twin-peaked volcano with an elevation of 1,703 meters, located on the eastern tourist island of Flores. Authorities have elevated its alert status to the highest level.
Cancellations include flights from Jetstar and Virgin Australia to various Australian cities, as well as those from Air India, Air New Zealand, Singapore’s Scoot, and China’s Juneyao Airlines, all attributed to the volcanic activity, according to the Bali airport’s website.
Additionally, several domestic flights from AirAsia heading to Labuan Bajo on Flores were also called off.
“Ngurah Rai Airport is still functioning normally, but flight operations depend on the timetable. Some flights are canceled due to the volcano, varying by route and airline,” stated a Bali airport customer service representative, who wished to remain anonymous, during an interview with AFP.
