Sigma Corporation Introduces the Versatile and Professional-Grade 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art Lens, Elevating Photography and Video Capabilities
Ronkonkoma, NY, June 17, 2025 – Sigma Corporation of America, the US branch of Sigma Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki; Headquarters: Asao-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan), is excited to launch the 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art Lens, marking the first Art lens created for APS-C formats since 2016 and the first specifically designed for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras.
This impressive new lens succeeds the innovative 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art for DSLR cameras, providing users with a wider perspective and enhanced versatility at the telephoto end. With a redesigned optical system, it combines the clarity and brightness of a prime lens with the adaptability of a zoom lens. This swift, adaptable lens is also tailored for video, featuring an internal zoom mechanism, fast and silent linear autofocus, minimal focus breathing, and a design resistant to dust and splashes, making it perfect for various environments.
Weighing only 535g (18.9 oz), the 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art lens is significantly lighter than its predecessor and packed with features that will attract photographers, videographers, and content creators, no matter their camera system.
The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art lens will be released in mid-July through authorized Sigma dealers for Sony E-mount, L-Mount, Fujifilm X Mount, and Canon RF Mount, priced at $919 USD.

The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art builds on the groundbreaking features of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, which earned accolades as the world’s first F1.8 zoom lens in photography and videography. Now thirteen years following its launch, this next-gen lens achieves not only exceptional optical quality but also a wider focal length of 17-40mm, all while being over 30% lighter. This significantly boosts the versatility of a large aperture standard zoom lens.
Additionally, with swift and silent autofocus powered by the HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), along with an internal zoom mechanism and minimal focus breathing, this lens excels in both still photography and video shooting. Sigma, the trailblazer behind the initial F1.8 zoom lens, continues to redefine the legacy of large aperture zoom lenses.
KEY FEATURES
Standard zoom lens with a large aperture producing image quality akin to a prime lens
Constant maximum aperture of F1.8
The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art uniquely offers the convenience of a zoom with a consistent F1.8 aperture across its full range. This large aperture allows for great performance in low-light settings and creative effects using background blur.
Outstanding optical performance
The lens features an optical design achieved through advanced techniques, incorporating high-precision aspherical elements, ensuring exceptional optical performance.
It effectively minimizes axial chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, allowing for high resolution even at the open F1.8 aperture, capturing fine textures and details with remarkable clarity.
Flexible framing capabilities
The new 17-40mm range expands on the previous 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, providing coverage equivalent to 25.5-60mm in 35mm format. This makes it ideal for capturing everything from wide-angle tabletop shots to portraits making full use of its telephoto perspective, allowing photographers to take advantage of the large F1.8 aperture without the need to change lenses much.
* Approximately 27.2-64mm for the Canon RF Mount version.
Designed to combat flare and ghosting
Using advanced simulation and Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating, the lens effectively reduces flare and ghosting, delivering rich, high-contrast images in various lighting conditions.
Highly portable and adaptable for any photography situation
Stable inner zoom mechanism
With its inner zoom structure, the lens maintains a consistent length during focus adjustments, making it user-friendly for handheld shooting, on tripods, or gimbals, while also improving its resistance to dust and moisture.
Compact, lightweight design enhances mobility
The Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art is more than 30% lighter with a 67mm filter diameter, one size smaller than that of its predecessor. This portability makes it ideal for travel, daily photography, and video projects where ease of movement is vital.
Dust- and splash-resistant design with water- and oil-repellent coating
It features a structure resistant to dust and splashes, along with a protective coating on the front surface, enabling safe use in challenging outdoor settings.
* The design suggests resistance to dust and splashes, but it is not waterproof. Caution is advised near water to prevent major malfunctions from splash exposure.
Equipped with two AFL buttons*, they can be customized to perform any function from the camera’s menu. Positioned thoughtfully on the side and top, users can adjust settings conveniently.
Easily use the buttons whether in landscape or portrait orientation.
* Functions can only be assigned on compatible cameras. The available functions might differ based on the camera model.
* The FUJIFILM X Mount version includes an AF function button that lets you choose AF lock or AF operation through the lens switch.
Video Production Features
HLA-powered High-Speed Autofocus
Utilizing HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) allows for quiet, rapid, and precise autofocus. This efficient autofocus system is ideal for not only still photography but also for solo shooting with a gimbal or vlogging.
Reduced Focus Breathing
Focus breathing is minimized, which helps avoid changes in the viewing angle due to focus shifts, providing smooth and natural focus transitions when capturing video.
Aperture Ring with Multiple Functions
An aperture ring* offers intuitive aperture control. For video recording, users can disable the click switch for smooth and silent aperture adjustments. It also features an aperture ring lock switch** to avoid unintentional adjustments during filming.
* The Canon RF Mount version features a control ring instead of an aperture ring. This version does not include an aperture ring click switch or lock switch.
** When activated in position A, the aperture ring will lock in that position. If switched on in any position other than A, it will be secured within the range from the widest to the smallest aperture, and turning it to position A will no longer be possible.
