Billingham Hadley Pro 2020: Quick Overview
Since 1973, Billingham has been creating bags. While the world has evolved, their satchels have remained timeless. Renowned for using high-quality materials and a classic design, Billingham bags are durable enough to be used for many years and can even be passed down to future generations.
The Hadley Pro 2020 is an updated version of the classic Hadley Pro. This camera bag is crafted in the British style using leather and canvas. It’s also ideally sized for most photographers who are on the move. With its practical features and attractive design, it’s no wonder the Hadley Pro has become a bestseller.
However, it requires a notable initial investment. In our selection of the best camera bags, you will find cheaper options that can hold the same or even more gear than the Hadley Pro. But what you are paying for here is lasting quality. Online reviews highlight customers who have used a Hadley for many years.
When you open the bag, its sturdiness is instantly recognizable. From the straps to the strong handle, every detail of the Hadley Pro 2020 reflects a robust design. You can choose either a cotton canvas or synthetic FibreNyte exterior, both of which offer triple-layer waterproofing. This is enhanced by durable brass hardware and full-grain leather accents, giving it a dependable, work-ready feel.
Interestingly, I found the leather quick-release straps were not as quick as expected. However, I’ve been informed they will become easier with time. Overall, the bag seems built to age gracefully. It’s clearly designed to adapt to your equipment, with buckles on the front that let you control the tightness of the lid’s straps. Additionally, you have the option to attach extra pockets on either end.
However, most users may find this unnecessary. What first appears to be a compact messenger bag is actually quite spacious. With a padded insert in place, the Hadley Pro 2020 offers a surprisingly large interior. Its flexible sides allow it to accommodate a significant amount of gear. It also comes with two vertical and two horizontal dividers that can be repositioned using velcro strips, helping you to organize the internal space.
It can fit an APS-C setup with a few mid-sized lenses easily. I also had no issues with fitting a DSLR with a 50mm lens attached, along with wide-angle and telephoto zoom lenses. The velcro dividers give you the versatility to separate lenses and even create elevated sections for smaller accessories near the top of the bag. Moreover, the insert features a padded lid that can be folded back to allow for simpler access.
The Hadley Pro bag showcases its limits with longer lenses. While it has a decent depth, larger camera bodies and lenses must be placed sideways to fit. If you prefer to stack your equipment vertically, you’ll need to separate the camera from the lens for better organization. Despite these constraints, the Billingham bag offers more space than expected.
It features a padded insert along with spacious front pockets designed for easy access to your gear. The updated 2020 Hadley Pro includes a weather-resistant zip pocket on the back for document storage. Notably, it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop compartment, but you can discreetly slide a 13-inch MacBook Air between the insert and the back of the bag.
Essentially, the Hadley Pro’s storage is more impacted by the weight you’re comfortable carrying than its actual capacity. As a messenger-style bag, your equipment remains within easy reach; however, the single-strap design can place strain on just one shoulder. You can carry the Hadley Pro with its sturdy strap or attach it to a suitcase handle with the built-in retainer, although most users will prefer the removable shoulder sling.
If you opt for the shoulder sling, consider investing in the optional SP40 shoulder pad. This stylish leather pad, available in four colors to match the bag, is as well-crafted as the bag itself. For the price of the pack, it should ideally be included. Without it, the cotton webbing might dig into your shoulder when the bag is heavily loaded.
