Wrexham has achieved promotion for the third consecutive season with a 3-0 victory at home against Charlton Athletic in League One, marking yet another exciting milestone under the guidance of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Sam Smith scored twice after Ollie Rathbone got the first goal on Saturday, leading the Red Dragons to the Championship next season in front of a thrilled crowd at Racecourse Ground, which included Reynolds from Canada and McElhenney from America.
This achievement makes the Welsh club the first to secure three consecutive promotions in the top five divisions of English football. They will return to the second tier for the first time since their relegation in 1982.
Phil Parkinson’s team finished the season in second place with 89 points, with one game still to play. Birmingham, having already topped the League One standings with 102 points, secured their promotion as champions.
“When big matches arrive and you deliver one of your strongest performances, it’s incredibly satisfying. We did it last week with a 5-1 win against Blackpool and reinforced it today with another solid display,” a jubilant Parkinson stated.
The final whistle ignited a frenzy as thousands of fans rushed onto the field, brandishing banners that read “Back to back to back” and lifting smiling players into the air amid plumes of red smoke, while Parkinson finally allowed himself a smile.
Supporters across the Atlantic were likely celebrating too, as the team has gained immense popularity there thanks to the “Welcome to Wrexham” documentary and the ownership of the North American duo who took charge in early 2021.
