Despite its live-action adaptation Lilo & Stitch opening alongside Paramount Pictures’ big-hitter Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Disney is reportedly confident in the film’s performance at the box office, with the studio already in talks about a possible sequel.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Lilo & Stitch is poised to open to more than US$150 million in the U.S. and Canada over its opening weekend, breaking even on its reported US$100 million budget and even surpassing Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’s estimated US$80 million earnings.

Disney is so confident that it already has plans for a live-action sequel, with Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman saying in a statement that “it feels like it’s going to work very well, and it’s the kind of property that lends itself to more.”
Adapted from the original 2002 animated movie, Lilo & Stitch stars original writer and director Chris Sanders, who returns to voice Stitch, the titular blue alien formerly known as Experiment 626, who crash-lands in Hawaii before being adopted by Lilo (Maia Kealoha) and her older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong). Its supporting cast includes Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) as Jumba, Billy Magnussen (Road House) as Pleakley and Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) as Cobra Bubbles. The film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) and written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes.
Lilo & Stitch is now showing in theatres, with its synopsis reading:
A lonely human girl named Lilo adopts a dog-like alien named Stitch to mend her fractured family, unaware that Stitch is genetically engineered to be a force of destruction, and is being pursued by aliens and social workers, while Lilo teaches Stitch the idea of family.
